England collapse brings the point of no return
There were some incredible matches in the 2005 Ashes, where the balance shifted on an hourly basis, but none that saw victory come as unexpectedly as it did here. For Australia it was a combination of great escape and great heist, and living testament of their refusal to ever give up on a situation however unpromising it seems.
Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne felt it was the best victory of their careers, Warne going back to the start of his international career, a match against Sri Lanka in 1992, to find something comparable. Their whooping joy at the end, as they rushed on to the Adelaide Oval to celebrate, revealed their incredulity as England recorded cricket's highest losing total for a team batting first and declaring.
For Andrew Flintoff's team the shock of their sixwicket defeat appeared too much to bear. For three days England dominated the match, running up a seemingly impregnable 551 for six. Unhappily for them, Australia gained a toehold on the other two days, which they turned into a victory march by preying on their opponent's uncertainty with practised precision as the visitors lost their last nine wickets for 60 runs in 43 overs.
Warne, played with almost disdainful ease in England's first innings, became their nemesis in the second as the pitch took turn, taking four for 29 in 27 overs on the final day. Bowling unchanged from the Cathedral End for two entire sessions in the 90F temperature (he must be glad he stuck with the jungle training now) Warne spun his deceits off the pitch and into the batsmen's heads.
You can never discount a man with 694 Test wickets pulling rabbits from his hat, or from an England batting lineup, especially when pressure causes them to breed. As he appositely put it, "every ball became a hand grenade".
His plan, indeed Australia's, lay in giving nothing away, ratcheting up the pressure with dot balls rather than jaffas. However, it did not seem to be working until umpire Steve Bucknor gave Andrew Strauss out, caught at short leg as he used his feet to work the wristspinner to leg. It was a poor decision, the ball turning enough to miss the bat. The stump microphones picked up a collection of noises, but none was ball hitting bat. There is a feeling that Warne can play Bucknor like a puppeteer, something he did to get Ian Bell lbw in Brisbane. His appeal for Strauss, though, was halfhearted rather than the thespian plea that has won him the odd dodgy decision in the past.
Frustratingly for England, it was the first of several small events, in the detail of the disaster, which might have otherwise staved off defeat. Others, like the barmy runout of Bell, or the fact that tea was taken between the innings (thus saving Australia two overs that would otherwise have been lopped off), might have made all the difference.
Most sides can point to fateful moments that might have made a difference but there is no escaping the awful truth that most of England's batsmen colluded in their downfall. Bell's runout, after he and Paul Collingwood hesitated over what looked a comfortable single to backward square, betrayed the pair's tension, though not Warne's, who calmly collected Michael Clarke's wayward throw before underarming into the stumps at the bowler's end.
England's confusion over whether to lie doggo or make whoopee on a pitch at last showing signs of wear was evident in the variety of their dismissals. It was certainly sensed by Australia, who increased the intensity of their cricket as the final day got under way.
Starting the day 97 ahead, quick England runs would have made life difficult for Australia, but with the hot weather finally opening the cracks on the pitch, there was a risk in their pursuit. The other option was to bat out time, a tactic adopted by Strauss and Bell, but not Kevin Pietersen who, trying to sweep a halfvolley from Warne out of the rough, ugg australia pas cher, was bowled offstump behind his legs.
The ball was far too full for the shot, which was preempted and risky. Pietersen will claim he plays that way irrespective of the situation, which is a bit like saying you will always drive on the left, even in France. Later, when Australia chased down the 168 needed to win, he was again the villain, gifting Clarke a seven off Flintoff after his wild throw to Geraint Jones went for four overthrows.
Flintoff bowled through his discomfort well enough to take two wickets, but it need not have come to that had he batted with care. A wild swish at Brett Lee, now reverseswinging it as England had in 2005 (bowling coach Troy Cooley has not been idle since he swapped sides), saw Flintoff edge behind and begin the steady parade of condemned men to and from the middle. Only Collingwood, who more than anyone did not deserve to finish on the losing side, kept Warne and Co at bay, ending unbeaten as England were bowled out for 129, with 38 overs of the game left.
That left Australia needing 168 to win at a rate of 4.67 an over, a doddle in a oneday game but more taxing on the last day of a Test. England might even have felt they had a sniff after both openers had gone by the sixth over, but Ponting, with a calming 49, along with Michael Hussey, unbeaten on 61, ensured Australia's jitters chasing low totals would not haunt them here.
England's conservative mindset was apparent again during Australia's run chase, with Flintoff setting defensive fields, particularly to Giles. Too many singles were available to apply the kind of pressure forced on them by Australia earlier in the day.
The postmortem will be thorough. One of the fundamentals England must address is Duncan Fletcher's influence on selection. Fletcher pushed for Jones and Giles to play in this series, citing character as his main reason. When England most needed it, though, to bat through a nerveracking afternoon, it was notably absent.
In 2005, England attacked Australia with the most talented players available at the time. That has not been the case here with Monty Panesar and Sajid Mahmood left out for the more conservative picks of Giles and James Anderson. They may have lost this Test playing badly for a day, but Matthew Hoggard betrayed their defensive mindset when he said beforehand that England had come here not to lose.
Finally, there is the dilemma of Vaughan to sort out before the third Test starts on Dec 14. Vaughan is the captain who won back the Ashes for England last year, and there will be a clamour for his return. His presence on this tour (he is in Perth with the rest of the Academy and is expected to play in a oneday match on Friday) has been particularly unhelpful to Flintoff, who has been operating in his shadow.
For all his qualities, and there are many, Vaughan has not had much proper cricket. Part of England's problem in this series has been selecting men like Giles and Anderson, who have not played much recently. So why pick another?.
