Now that the silly business of fashion has been getting the serious documentary treatment, the role has gone to Anna Wintour. The editorinchief of Vogue, she recently played the part of potentate, inscrutable and curt, on 60 Minutes. And she owns it again as the lead in The September Issue, the featurelength doc that was screened for Toronto media Tuesday. It opens in New York on Aug. 28 and is scheduled for release in Toronto on Oct. 23.
A behindthescenes account of the creation of the 840 pages that was the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine, the movie doesn't dwell on the seamy side of the publishing industry. It leaves out the tabledancing that goes on to get the big advertising dollars that make the big fall books possible. Cutler's cinema manages to achieve.

Onscreen, designer Thakoon twinkly compares Wintour to Madonna. Photographer Mario Testino considers cover options, suggesting perhaps this body with that head. Nameless consumptive ciphers come and go through hallways brimming with selections of merchandise that would make a stylist anywhere grow weak in the knees and could make a Canadian stylist, not used to such riches, go weak in the bladder.
But what the business of fashion does honour is The September Issue's portrayal of Wintour and Coddington as two seasoned, accomplished, mature, female professionals, matching wiles and relishing each other's game.
